Attendance at the Ohio State University Ceremony

March 8, 2023
Takeda visited Ohio State University(OSU)*1 to discuss industry-academia cooperation with Japan with executives of OSU in digital data science and quantum information science . (Takeda graduated from OSU with a Ph.D. in physics)

OSU is collaborating with other U.S. universities, NASA, the State of Ohio, and U.S. industry to establish a ground-based laboratory (TAF) at the George Washington Carver Science Park for the Post-ISS commercial low Earth orbit satellite. Takeda also attended the opening ceremony. Carver*2 is the name of a leading innovator and botanist in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. Ohio is also the birthplace of the Wright Brothers, who developed manned power aircraft, and astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, and has a strong interest in aviation and space. OSU has courses and other programs commemorating both astronauts.

[*1]In Japan, university partnerships on the West Coast and East Coast are the focus of attention, but the Midwest is also home to the Big Ten universities, including OSU, the University of Michigan, Purdue University, and the University of Wisconsin, all of which are prominent in data science, quantum information science, and semiconductor research. Collaboration with these universities is also important.

George Washington Carver was born the Son of Slaves in Missouri, lost his parents in infancy and the Carver family took him in and raised him as a child.
As a young man, his interest in vegetation led him to study botany and agronomy at the University of Missouri, where he studied. He also developed and promoted the use of these agricultural products. One of his favorite sayings was, “If we only had peanuts and potatoes, we could prevent world hunger.”

In addition, Ohio is home to many Japanese companies, including Honda and Kao, and as the state’s flagship university, OSU (https://news.osu.edu/ohio-state-hosts-grand-opening-for-terrestrial-science-park / (The university is already promoting cooperation with Tsukuba University, Nagoya University, and others in data science, etc., and is hoping for further industry-academia collaboration in space.)

Part of the TAF (the above-mentioned ground laboratory) will be built adjacent to a site managed by Ohio State University. This site includes the largest TRC (Transportation Research Center) facility in North America, which Takeda toured with Dean from Ohio State University. He had the opportunity to test drive the Honda NSX with a test driver.

George Washington Carver is a pioneer of “permaculture” (permanentagriculture). He is also regarded as one of America’s most inventive people.
An example of how the emancipation of slaves (Zeitenwende) in the 19th century brought about new innovators.
